Seems that Glamour went and got regular sized women for the upcoming edition of their magazine.
It is not a matter of 'about time' to me, but a matter of 'what have they been waiting for'? Since the push the notion of beauty to everyone, it only seems fair that they truly market to everyone.
I am wondering how many of the readers (us) will be able to adjust to seeing women that are regular sizes in the media, not just the slim/slender/tiny.
I would say that the goal is to create a fantasy but in truth, I think it is a tool used to make money. Women spend their lives and money on trying to live up to standards that are unrealistic. Beauty and fashion is a multi-billion dollar enterprise.
I think its awesome, but I don't have the opportunity to look at it. My wife is not like that and she is awesome. We went to a titty bar the other night and the had a typical slim fake boobed blond hair playboy type girl over there. Was almost disgusted by her, I'm so tired of that so called look. If beauty is supposed to be everywhere then is it nowhere?
Dam I responded to this last night on my iphone but it didn't take, makes me mad, oh well.
Strippers are just strippers, but the older I get the less enthused I become with those places. The girls become more whorish and all look the same. Can't help but love some titties though.
Its not the only thing described, its just the most sold and shoved in your face everywhere outside your bathroom mirror. Now all are growing up shallow because of it. Or at least in America they are. Maybe someday they will kill off the ugly. Check out the babies and throw them off a cliff like in that movie three hundred. Would help the population problem but thats a whole other thread.
I do not have an issue with strippers or the clubs, as they are responding to what the market (men) calls for. I do not judge them--it is a job. I do not get into the so-called moral tangle of if it is right or wrong, nor do I slip into gently supporting misogyny b/c that is not my career. I have found myself shocked at how easily ppl label those human beings. Underneath the glitter and flash, they are human.
I am not clear on all the reasons why strip clubs are popular but I think it boils down to the male patrons liking to look at women and are encouraged to do so--not something that is appropriate for daily life.
As to people being shallow, I think that is the nature of our species. Until one applies measured thought to the process, the attraction to the more dazzling flowers in the garden happens. My hope is that we see the beauty of every thing growing in the garden of life.
Getting back to the photo shoot--I hope that other mags follow suit, so that a wider standard of beauty is reflected for younger women to see. It cannot be too hard to incorporate average sized women in ads throughout, even if it is every other month or what have you. I am not referring to makeovers; I am speaking of women shot in flattering angles with all the glamour tools.
I wonder how the buying public will respond. I remember keenly the mixed reaction to the Dove "Real Beauty" ads.
Because drinking and titties go hand in hand, they always will be popular.
Magazine shoot isn't even a matter of beauty, its a matter of whats out in the real world. Its why I come on this website, its more in my take on the world.
You might be able to compare titty bars to the magazine though. If in titty bars all you had was average or socially ugly girls, it might not do as much business. Same rule could be applied to your magazine.
I have no issue with women (or men) who choose to work in bars in whatever capacity; it is a choice and a way of making a living and honest work after all.
and evilpuke, I believe what Liras is saying is it is BECAUSE of the invalid, fabricated (and photoshopped) women IN magainzes that the male concept of "beauty" - and yes, females also, are formed. i.e. thin, blond, big breasted are beautiful (which they are, let's not follow through on the innate prejudice and say women who look like that are NOT) - but, the point being that those clubs hire a specific "type" because of the unrealistic expectations that people generally internalize.
the issue is that our society needs to stop being so narrow-minded and rigid about defining what is attractive and what is not.
that Glamour spread was fanatstic - the girl was wonderful- not just lovely but so comfortable in her skin, so obviously comfortable in who she was, that it was her inner worth and loveliness that shone through.
The biggest objection I do have towards strip clubs is that they engender viewpoints such as we see here - seeing these women as one-dimensional - the sum of their breast size. They have lives beyond displaying their flesh, dynamics, worries, issues and mundane realities - like everyone else.
I agree with all of that, but society doesn't do this (american society anyways, and we bleed our filth into other countries all the time). Further more most of the people don't want to do this, and it will continue until society breaks down because they can't feel anything except for sadness and they don't know why. You should all check out a book called Culture Jam.
Viewing women like that is okay in the club I think. Its an understanding they are there to work and I'm there to drink to get my cheap thrills. But when that sort of thinking spills into the outside life, thats a problem. If your at work and you think of your coworkers as objects or not stripper standards, you fuck up your way of thinking and then your whole reality is fucked up. It is all entertainment, and should be thought of that way. The entertainment mind set should be left at the club.
I have known guys who said they would only date size zero women, got tired of telling them there is more than that out there and that skinny is just not that attractive anyways. Look like rich ethiopians or something like that. I enjoy the real woman very much (my wife for instance). Just have more to offer, and I'm not talking amount of flesh.
EP, what do you mean "bleed our filth?" Do you think that other countries do not have unrealistic beauty standards and are somehow not misogynist? Feudal China and foot binding. Medieval Europe and the quest for pale skin, so women were rubbing lead into their skins, to appear all the more pale. The list goes on. No society needs our Western ideals to help them create unrealistic expectations of the general populace.
Maybe they may put pressure on women to look more "Western" but in truth, every culture has standards os what they call pretty and thus, more desirable.
I am not sure why going to a strip club is a cheap thrill, as you put it. I have seen all sorts of dancers and I saw men all cow-eyed and happy, a they should be, in those venues. Entertainment is entertainment. There is a diff between a bellydancer and a topless dancer, yes. but the lady with the cymbals and veils is not morally superior to the girl with only glitter and a g-string; they are doing different types of dance. I have refrained from delving deep into strippers, for it is too easy to fall into false labeling. Respect is internal then external--there are people who do not respect themselves, so a nun will not escape their vitriol.
I am familiar with Culture Jam. I am also aware that consuming fulfills other sorts of needs besides status. I have traveled a number of places--they did not need a bottle of Pepsi from America to divide themselves into cliques.
I am not upset with a man having a preference for thin women. Go right ahead. What triggers the sexual and attraction wires is deeply personal. I only ask that they do not denigrate women who are not a zero or think they are horrible for not trying to be so.
I tend to like tall and lean guys with lots of wild hair, but that does not mean those who are short, stocky and bald are ugly by any means.
My whole point of this thread is to talk of imagery and to reminds us that we all are real women, everyone of us. I do not know any cyborg women-yet.
What does your wife think of this? Does she comment on the site? I would like to hear her take on things.
